Go-Wingfoil Classroom

Welcome to the Go-Wingfoil classroom.

Here you will find a series of focussed “bite sized” articles that will help you develop your wingfoiling skills. Wingfoiling is hard to learn because there are multiple skills to master. Trying to learn everything at once can be overwhelming, so I have tried to break down the key steps in the journey and focus on the key lessons that I believe are most critical to success. These short bite size articles will be based on my own practical experience, including tips that others have given that helped me and those that I have given that I have been told were most helpful.

I’m hoping to provide an additional tool in your quiver as you learn this great sport. In particular, I want to try and help with those “Why isn’t this working moments”. The planned syllabus is below, with links to the articles that are complete. If you subscribe you will be alerted when a new one lands. If you have a question that you want raise then please leave a comment and I’ll do my best to address it.

A teacher explains wing foiling

Beginners

  1. The best 5 videos every new Wingfoiler should watch and why. There are hundreds of videos out there, I have watched most of them. Here’s the five I recommend beginners watch first. (Available here).
  2. How to select the best location and conditions to learn Wingfoiling. Key considerations when looking for a spot to learn and what conditions will give you the best chance to succeed, including weather forecasting. (Available here).
  3. What Wing Handling Exercises Must I Master on dry land. Before you hit the water for your early sessions spend time getting familiar with the wing and learn these key skills that you must have in the early sessions (Available here).
  4. Beginner Wingfoiling: From Knees to Standing and Taxiing. Key tips to get you from kneeling to standing and taxiing with control. (Available here).
  5. Beginner Wingfoiling: Get flying on your Wingfoil and Foil With Control. Key tips on getting those incredible first flights. (Coming soon).
  6. Exercise to master Wingfoiling flight height – The touch and go exercise. (Coming soon).
  7. How do I pump my wing effectively when Wingfoiling. Get more efficient at pumping to get more flight time and open up less windy days (Coming soon).
  8. Why am I worse on one tack and what to do about it. Everyone has a stronger and weaker stance (conventional or goofy foot) but you need to get comfortable in both (Coming soon).

Improvers (Planned for 2026)

  1. How do I master the glide – key exercise to master gliding on foil. Learning to glide the foil is a key skill to develop and a prequesite to gybing.
  2. How do I learn to carve the foil – the S turn exercise. Steering the board using the foil is a critical skill to master, it unlocks the gybe and tack.
  3. How do I get comfortable running downwind. The locked in feeling of a beam reach can be addictive. You need to get out of your comfort zone as you prepare for gybing.
  4.  Why use a harness – it’s like unlocking a cheat code. It’s easy to learn, it helps keep the arms fresh and it opens up grip switches which help with transitions.

Intermediates (Planned for 2026)

  1. Why gybing on foil is hard to learn – it’s not one thing. The on foil gybe is complex and is actually multiple skills. Using the skills you mastered in the exercises you are ready to put them together and gybe with confidence.
  2. How do I master toe side Wingfoiling. Once you gybe you have a new problem, you are riding toe side. How to gain comfort and control in the toe side stance.
  3. What is a good exercise to lock in gybes and toe side – the linked gybe downwinder. Practice makes perfect and this exercise provides a fun challenge to lock the gybe into muscle memory.
  4. How do I switch feet safely. Once you have gybed you will want to learn to switch feet because it is harder to go upwind  efficiently toe side. This is especially true for us foilers over fifty. I had my worst accident learning to switch I now have a method to learn safely.
  5. How to tack on foil. If you can gybe then you have the skills needed. Breaking down the move and how to master it.

Supplemental References (Planned for 2026)

  1. What is the best Wingfoiling gear for beginners. What gear should a beginner Wingfoiler buy (available here).
  2. Understanding points of sail. Refresher that clarifies points of sailing to ensure the terminology in the lessons is understood (available here).
  3. Dealing with Gusts and Squalls. Tips on how to manage gusts, avoid squalls but get back safely if you do get caught out while wingfoiling.
  4. How to fall safely. You will fall off the board frquently, boards are hard and foils are sharp. Here are some tips on how to avoid injury and damaged gear based on personal experience.
  5. Understanding Foil Characteristics – what matters and what doesn’t. As you progress your skills you are likely to progress to smaller more agile foils. What changes should you consider and how will they affect your experience.

The list above is everything that I have planned for now. I will add to it later as I further develop my own skills. If there is something else you would like to see, then drop me a line (stevew@go-wingfoil.com).
